Neurodivergent-Affirming Therapy for Autism and ADHD in Brighton

Neurodivergent-affirming therapy sees neurodivergence as a natural cognitive variation rather than a defect to be fixed. You don't need to be forced into a mould that doesn’t fit you. You deserve a space where your uniqueness is understood and respected.

Living with ADHD, Autism, or both (what is commonly known as AuDHD) in a world designed around neurotypical brains can be exhausting. You might spend your entire day masking, forcing yourself to look perfectly composed, only to crash the second you get home with zero energy left.

Living in this way can easily lead to burnout and a general sense of unhappiness with the world. It’s important to notice signs of this happening and get the support you deserve.

Signs of Neurodivergent Burnout

If you notice many of the signs below, it may be time to seek help. Our therapists in Brighton are here to support you in living a more authentic life.

Inability to Function

Knowing exactly what tasks you need to complete, but feeling physically and mentally paralyzed when trying to start them.

Chronic Sensory Overload

Feeling overwhelmed by bright lights, loud environments, specific textures, or overlapping background noises.

Post-task Crashes

Pouring 110% of your energy into a passionate project or work deadline, followed by an intense mental crash that takes days to recover from.

Rejection Anxiety

Experiencing intense distress over the fear of letting people down, being misunderstood, or facing perceived criticism.

How We Support Your Journey

The team at Psychotherapy and Healing Hub prides itself in practicing neurodivergent affirming care right here in the Brighton community. Instead of trying to get you to hide your traits or be more like others, we work with you to build a life that actually accommodates how your brain naturally processes the world.

Neurodivergent-affirming therapy can look very different for each client, but there are some common themes:

  • We explore who you are underneath societal expectations and reduce internalized shame

  • You are free to stim, avoid eye contact, move around, or take breaks without judgment

  • Therapists help you identify and lean into your natural strengths rather than focusing entirely on deficits

  • The space (whether in-person or virtual) is tailored to your specific nervous system needs

  • Therapy focuses heavily on managing overstimulation, executive dysfunction, and chronic stress

Therapy Modalities Typically Used

Traditional "talk therapy" can sometimes feel inadequate if it doesn't account for your nervous system. Being affirming of neurodivergence means that our therapists must adapt evidence-based therapeutic frameworks to ensure they are accessible and collaborative for ADHD and autistic individuals:

Some commonly used modalities include:

Internal Family Systems (IFS)

We explore the different "parts" of you. We look gently at the parts of you that handle masking, perfectionism, or inner criticism, helping you understand their protective roles without letting them run the show.

CBT & DBT

We modify traditional cognitive behavioral strategies to focus on actual accommodation rather than forcing you to change how you think. We focus on building distress tolerance systems that respect executive dysfunction and sensory needs.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

We build flexibility around unhelpful thoughts and self-compassion so that you can reduce the impact of internalized shame and external expectations.

In therapy, we encourage you to discuss your preferences with your therapist, and the therapist will adjust to you.
